Our Takeaways from a Week of Security Conferences
Published on 22 August 2019
Earlier this month, the Elevate team went on the road for a week packed with security conferences and events. Even though it was a super busy time, it’s always great to connect with fellow vendors, customers, prospects and other industry peers.
SANS Security Awareness Summit
We had a great time getting fellow security awareness practitioners together for cocktails on the eve of the biggest security conference specifically focused on security awareness. Plus, the trolley from the conference hotel to our venue in downtown San Diego was pretty fun! Thank you to everyone who attended.
BSides Las Vegas
The BSides crowd and vibe is always great, and Las Vegas this year was no exception. We sponsored the conference this year, and in the spirit of #NoWasteSecurity, we skipped bringing fancy swag. Instead, we handed each visitor to our table $5 of Elevate Security’s money to donate to one of three charities, Year Up, Girls Who Code or Homes for Our Troops – it was a big hit.
Black Hat Briefing: How Data Can Shape Security Engagement
My last big engagement in this whirlwind week was delivering a briefing at Black Hat alongside Elevate friend Aika Sengirbay. You can see slides here from our talk, “It's Not What You Know, It's What You Do: How Data Can Shape Security Engagement," and there was also a great recap in Dark Reading.
If you missed the briefing, Aika and I are doing a webinar version of our talk later in September; you can sign up here.
The Time Is Now for Security Culture
One of the most striking things about this week was the feeling of momentum shifting, where the industry is finally recognizing that building a positive security culture is a necessary goal to keep companies safe from cyber risks. This was apparent when we talked to peers at BSides, SANS and Black Hat, and it was even the main idea in the Black Hat keynote speech by Dino Dai Zovi, mobile security lead at Square. (And looking ahead to 2020, “The Human Element” is the theme of the next behemoth security conference, RSA.)
Given that this is the core idea behind why we founded Elevate, we’re excited to help drive this momentum, and hopefully move the industry even a little faster toward people-powered security.
